Yellow mustard health benefits
You don't want to go for a posh Dijon style mustard, instead go for a yellow mustard that you would find on a hotdog. This is because the components of yellow mustard are very healthy (they don't tend to be full of sugar as with ketchup):-
Mustard seed has a nutritional profile that yields a plentiful supply of essential minerals including calcium, iron, manganese, phosphorus, sulforaphane and zinc. Mustard seeds supply tryptophan, phosphorus, selenium and iron. But, like many other seeds, these benefits are diminished slightly by the presence of anti-nutrients such as phytates and tannins. There is also some evidence that allyl isothiocyanate found in many mustard seed are cancer protective.
Turmeric is an adaptogen plant (a healing plant) that provides a host of benefits, from reducing psychological stress to regulating the immune system to calming inflammation. Turmeric is also a powerful antioxidant and it has been used as a powerful anti-inflammatory in Chinese and Indian medicine for millennia. The active ingredient of turmeric is called curcumin, this is better absorbed when taken with black pepper.
Apple cider vinegar (ACV) benefits include improving weight loss, dropping blood pressure and cholesterol levels, stabilising blood sugar, enhancing skin health and relieving acid reflux symptoms. Vinegar tends to blunt insulin and glucose responses.

Consuming garlic on a daily basis helps to lower cholesterol levels because of the anti-oxidant properties of Allicin. It is also immensely beneficial to regulate blood pressure and blood sugar levels. Garlic also contains quercetin (a plant polyphenol) which has anti-inflammatory effects and vasodilating effects. Allium vegetables, such as garlic and onions have bioactive sulfur compounds that are believed to have effects at each stage of cancer formation.

Homemade Yellow Mustard Recipe
- 1/2 cup yellow mustard seed powder (dry ground)
- 1/2 cup water
- 1/3 cup apple cider
- 1 teaspoon flour
- 3/4 teaspoon salt (or 1 teaspoon of Low sodium salt)
- 1/4 teaspoon turmeric
- 1/8 teaspoon garlic powder
- 1/8 teaspoon ground sweet paprika
- A pinch of pepper
Whisk together all of the ingredients (without the vinegar and salt) in a small saucepan until smoothly combined. Bring it to a boil over a medium heat. Simmer for 7 to 8 minutes, stirring occasionally. Allow to cool and whisk in the vinegar and salt (the mustard will continue to thicken over the next 24-48 hours. Transfer the mustard to the sterilised glass jar. Store the mustard in the refrigerator (but give it a few days to mellow in flavour).
